What is DIAKONIA?
DIAKONIA is a World Federation of Diaconal Associations and Communities. Legally DIAKONIA is a foundation and is domiciled in the Netherlands.

Who may become a member of DIAKONIA?
Membership of DIAKONIA is open to associations and communities of deaconesses, diaconal sisterhoods and brotherhoods, and organisations of diaconal ministers and church workers. Applications go to the executive committee via the regional president.

What is the basis of DIAKONIA?
DIAKONIA is called by the Lord of the Church, Jesus Christ, to the service of reconciliation in the world with the word of faith and the action of love.

What are the aims of DIAKONIA?
  • to further ecumenical relationships among diaconal associations and diaconal communities
  • to reflect on the nature and task of diakonia in the Biblical sense
  • to further a sense of diakonia in the churches and congregations
  • to strengthen fellowship among members and to render mutual help
  • to undertake common tasks

DACE is a member of the DIAKONIA World Federation and the DIAKONIA Region Africa-Europe (DRAE).

United Kingdom Liaison Group of DIAKONIA

The United Kingdom Liaison Group (UKLG) meets annually and brings together representatives from all the member Associations of DIAKONIA in the United Kingdom:

  • The Church of Scotland
  • The Diaconal Association of the Church of England (DACE)
  • The Methodist Diaconal Order
  • The Presbyterian Church of Ireland

World Assembly

DIAKONIA World Assemblies take place every four years, and the last to be held in the UK was Durham, England in 2005.

The regional grouping of DIAKONIA (DRAE) meet inbetween the World Assemblies.
