World Federation of Diaconal Associations and Diaconal Communities
DIAKONIA is a World Federation of Diaconal Associations and Communities. Legally DIAKONIA is a foundation and is domiciled in the Netherlands .
Who may become a member of DIAKONIA ?
Membership of DIAKONIA is open to associations and communities of deaconesses, diaconal sisterhoods and brotherhoods, and organisations of diaconal ministers and church workers. Applications go to the executive committee via the regional president.
What is the basis of DIAKONIA ?
DIAKONIA is called by the Lord of the Church, Jesus Christ, to the service of reconciliation in the world with the word of faith and the action of love.
What are the aims of DIAKONIA ?
- to further ecumenical relationships among diaconal associations and diaconal communities;
- to reflect on the nature and task of diakonia in the Biblical sense;
- to further a sense of diakonia in the churches and congregations;
- to strengthen fellowship among members and to render mutual help;
- to undertake common tasks.
DACE is a member of the DIAKONIA World Federation
also the DIAKONIA Region Africa-Europe (DRAE)
and the United Kingdom Liaison Group of DIAKONIA (UKLG).
DIAKONIA World Assemblies take place every four years, the last ones being held in Nova Scotia Canada in 1992, Friedrichroda , Germany in 1996, Brisbane in 2001and Durham , England in 2005.
The regional grouping of DIAKONIA (DRAE) meet in between the World Assembly and last met separately in Egypt in 2003.
UKLG (United Kingdom Liaison Group) meets annually and brings together representatives from all the member Associations of DIAKONIA in the United Kingdom :
- The Church of Scotland
- The Diaconal Association of the Church of England
- The Methodist Diaconal Order
- The Presbyterian Church of Ireland
